Level of analysis

A further consideration for business researchers that can apply to research design relates to concept of level. This relates to basic unit of measurement and analysis. Therefore, research would focus on:

  • Individuals: this includes study that focus on particular kinds of individuals like shop floor employees and managers.
  • Groups: this includes research that considers various kinds of groupings like board of directors and HR department.
  • Organisations: this includes surveys as WERS that regards workplace as the principal unit of analysis.
  • Societies: the main focus point here is the kind of analysis on national, social, political, environmental and economic contexts in which companies and businesses are located.

Differences in levels are commonly termed as SOGI-Model– societies, organisations, groups and individuals.
